Railways asks Enugu to pay debts owed it
The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), has asked Enugu State government to pay up many years of accumulated debts running into millions of naira, to enable it maintain facilities in the state.
The corporation said Enugu State government is indebted for upwards of 32 years, and that efforts to get the government to pay the debts have been fruitless.
The request followed an ultimatum issued the corporation by the state government to restore level crossing barriers in the metropolis
without further delay and ensure proper clothing of its staff manning the crossings for easy identification.
The state government, in an ultimatum to the corporation dated October 28, and signed by Commissioner of Commerce and Industry, Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo had expressed dismay over the parlous state of level crossing facilities of the corporation, saying it was responsible for last week’s accident on the rail track, which claimed a life and caused injuries on others.
