Rainstorm kills five persons, destroys 3,813 houses in Katsina
About 3, 813 houses were destroyed, while five people were killed in the rainstorm that affected several communities in Katsina State.
Spokesperson for the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Umar Muhammad, who disclosed this to newsmen, yesterday, said the rainstorm affected 13 Local Councils in the state.
Muhammad said three persons were killed in Kankara council, while two lost their lives to the natural disaster in Mai’adua council area.
He said government was working to prevent further flooding in the state, while an emergency response committee has been set up to prevent outbreak of cholera as a result of the attendant flood that followed the rainstorm.
Muhammad said: “In Kankara council, 176 houses were affected, in Danja, 125, Kankia 86, Katsina 620, Musawa 482, Batagarawa 361, Kusada 311 while in Sabuwa 111 houses destroyed.
“In Zango council, 105 houses were destroyed, in Batsari, 443, Funtua 258, Safana, 581 and Ingawa council, 154 houses were affected.
“Similarly, 176 houses were destroyed and three persons lost their lives in the disaster in Kankara , while 154 houses were damaged in Ingawa.”
He also listed five additional councils affected by the disaster, which SEMA was yet to assess, to include: Mashi, Mani, Mai’adua, Dandume and Matazu.
