A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Inuwa Garba (APC, Gombe), has expressed concern over the persistent farmer-herder crisis in Nigeria, pledging to champion dialogue and peace-building initiatives aimed at finding lasting solutions to the conflict.

Garba, who represents Yamaltu/Deba Federal Constituency of Gombe State, made the pledge on Thursday in Abuja shortly after he was inaugurated as a Global Peace Ambassador by the World Human Rights and Peace Commission (WHRAPC-Nigeria).

He described the honour as both a recognition of his public service and a call to greater responsibility, saying it would strengthen his resolve to promote peace, justice, dialogue and the protection of human dignity.
“I accept this honour with a deep sense of responsibility. Being found worthy through the commission’s rigorous selection process is a privilege I will always cherish. The confidence reposed in me will inspire me to work even harder in advancing the ideals of peace, justice and human dignity,” Garba said.

The lawmaker thanked the commission for the recognition, saying the award belonged not only to him but also to his family, constituents and the House of Representatives.

He noted that the world continues to face challenges ranging from armed conflicts and insecurity to climate change and social unrest, stressing that collective efforts were needed to promote peaceful coexistence.

Garba said his experience in legislative leadership and international parliamentary engagements had prepared him to contribute meaningfully to conflict resolution and peace advocacy.

Declaring that peace was everyone’s responsibility, he vowed not to serve as a peace ambassador in name alone but to actively promote reconciliation and dialogue.

As part of that commitment, Garba announced plans to convene a comprehensive peace and dialogue symposium in his constituency to address the recurring farmer-herder crisis, with a view to developing practical solutions that could be replicated across the country.

Presenting the award, the Deputy Country Coordinator of WHRAPC-Nigeria, Ambassador Lawal Ribah, described Garba as an accomplished legislator whose public service has been marked by integrity, excellence and selfless leadership.

Ribah highlighted Garba’s legislative contributions, including bills on entrepreneurship, agriculture, scientific innovation and institutional development, as well as motions on healthcare, security, infrastructure, environmental protection and citizens’ welfare.

He added that the lawmaker had complemented his legislative work with constituency projects focused on youth and women empowerment, education, healthcare, rural electrification, agriculture, employment generation and infrastructure development.

According to Ribah, the commission conferred the title of Global Peace Ambassador on Garba in recognition of his commitment to promoting peace, defending human dignity, advancing justice and supporting humanitarian causes.

Earlier, the Northern Regional Coordinator of WHRAPC-Nigeria, Ambassador Bashir Maradun, said the honour was reserved for individuals whose public service promotes unity, inspires hope and advances humanity, expressing confidence that Garba would justify the recognition.

Also speaking, Hon. Bob Solomon (APC, Rivers) described the award as well deserved, saying Garba had distinguished himself as a humble, peaceful and dependable leader committed to nation-building and public service.
