Rep pushes for commencement of Federal College of Education in Edo

Related

One year after Federal Government’s approval of the Federal College of Education, Ekiadolor, in Ovia North East Council of Edo State, a member of the House of Representatives, Dennis Idahosa, has called for its commencement without further delay.

Idahosa, who represents Ovia Federal Constituency, made the appeal to the Ministry of Education in two letters obtained by The Guardian.

In the letters dated February 10, 2020 with reference number: NASS/9HR/HON/DI/ABJ/350 and May 6, 2021 marked: NASS/9HR/HON/DI/ABJ/359, Idahosa restated the need for commencement of the institution.

He noted that the Federal Government to site the project in his constituency brought a lot of relief, adding that this was particularly so, because the state College of Education, Ekiadolor from where the federal institution would take off had been relocated.

He stressed that the celebration that trailed the news of the proposed institution in Ekiadolor was beginning to wane, as the people feared that it had been taken elsewhere.

“However, the indication that the new school was to take off in January 2020 has not materialised. This has caused a lot of restiveness amongst our people, the letters reads.

Idahosa concluded with the willingness to facilitate or assistance in ensuring the smooth take off of the institution as necessary facilities were already on ground.

Meanwhile, the ministry of education has assured the lawmaker that his request was been given the required attention.

Director of Tertiary Education in the Ministry, Mrs. R. G. Ilyasu, disclosed this in a letter with reference number: ADF/160/S. 400/T and dated July 6, 2021.

The Guardian recalled that the Federal Government had in January 2020 approved the establishment of six colleges of education to be sited in Edo, Bauchi, Benue, Osun, Ebonyi and Sokoto, representing the six geo-political zones of the country.

It stated that there was the need to increase the number of quality teachers in the country. There are presently 152 colleges of education in the country, including 21 federal, 49 for states and 82 private ones.
