Heavy rainfall has caused the collapse of the Ipin River bridge in Ibarapa East Local Council, cutting off access to over 50 communities. Residents called for urgent government intervention to address the crisis.
The bridge, a vital link for these communities, crumbled under persistent downpours that began on October 11. Residents reported that the intensity of the rainfall was unprecedented.
“No one can prevent rain, but this downpour was like nothing we’ve seen before,” shared one resident.
The collapse has resulted in significant hardship, disrupting transportation and access to essential services for the affected communities. The residents urged Governor Seyi Makinde and local council chairman Kazeem Arogundade to take swift action to rebuild the bridge and restore connectivity.
Responding to the situation, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, assured the public that the state government is aware of the issue and will be taking steps to repair the bridge in the near future.
The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Adebowale Ogundoyin, represents the affected constituency and is expected to advocate for his constituents in the House.
