Rivers Assembly affirms Simeon Amadi as Chief Judge
• Wike sacks Commissioner after media briefing on soot
The Rivers State House of Assembly, yesterday, confirmed Justice Simeon Amadi of the State High Court as substantive Chief Judge (CJ).
The confirmation followed a letter from the State Governor, Nyesom Wike, to the House seeking Amadi’s confirmation and approval as the next CJ, based on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC).
Some groups had earlier condemned the nomination of Justice Amadi as CJ, saying Governor Wike breached the constitution for not nominating the most Senior Judge in the state.
MEANWHILE, Governor Wike, yesterday, sacked his Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Igbiks Tamuno, shortly after addressing a press conference on soot and air quality in the state.
The Ministry of Environment and the Stakeholders Democracy Network (SDN) had organised a media briefing on soot and air quality to update members of the public on the pollution and government’s efforts in tackling the menace.
But shortly after Tamuno finished reading the statement, which was broadcast on several social media platforms and while journalists were still asking questions, he excused the gathering, saying he needed to answer an urgent call from the governor. Before the meeting ended, Special Assistant on the governor on Media, Kelvin Ebiri, disclosed that the commissioner had been sacked.
