The Rivers State House of Assembly has welcomed the Supreme Court’s judgment on the protracted political crisis in the state as Speaker Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule described it as a victory for democracy and the rule of law.

During the 129th Legislative Sitting of the Second Session on Friday, the House Leader, Major Jack, informed the Assembly of the Supreme Court’s judgment, which affirmed the legitimacy of the current Assembly members and ordered the House to resume sitting immediately.

The Supreme Court also ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Accountant-General of the Federation to stop releasing funds to the Rivers State Government from the Federation Account until an Appropriation Bill is presented to the properly constituted House.

Furthermore, the court nullified the local government elections conducted in the state in October 2024.

Speaker Amaewhule expressed his gratitude to the Justices of the Supreme Court, the political leader of Rivers State and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, and all those who contributed to the entrenchment of democratic principles in the state.

Amaewhule also called on Governor Siminialayi Fubara to “repent from his legion of sins” and urged those parading themselves as government appointees without the House’s constitutional approval to desist forthwith.

“We believe that now that the Supreme Court has spoken, Governor Siminialayi Fubara would repent from his legion of sins, and those criminals, those impostors who are parading themselves as appointees of this government without the constitutional imprimatur of this House would desist forthwith,” Amaewhule said.
