Founder of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, has blamed Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for the political turmoil in the state, accusing him of reneging on an agreement with his predecessor and political benefactor, Nyesom Wike.

In a video statement released on Thursday, Uwazuruike expressed support for Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, arguing that Fubara should have honoured any pre-existing political arrangements.

“He who goes to equity should have clean hands,” Uwazuruike stated, acknowledging that his position might be unpopular but insisting that keeping agreements is a fundamental principle—even ” among thieves.”

He further argued that the ongoing crisis, which led to President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State, could have been avoided if political agreements had been upheld.

“If you know that you’re a politician and are approached to do a dirty job that your conscience doesn’t permit, from the beginning, say ‘I won’t, I can’t do it.’ That makes you a gentleman,” he said.

He dismissed the argument that Fubara was elected by the masses, asserting that without a political godfather, candidates often remain unknown and unelectable.

“In this crisis, if it continues, many innocent people will die. And when you trace the origin, you will see that two persons reached an agreement—one party fulfilled his part, while the other refused after benefiting from it. That is unjust,” Uwazuruike stated.

He also referenced former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose’s earlier advice to Fubara, suggesting that had the Rivers governor heeded it, he would not be facing the current crisis.

He added, “Nobody is a better governor because Nigeria is a corrupt nation. If you know that you cannot keep an agreement, why accept it? Is it because you have been sworn in as governor and now have executive powers that you start flexing muscles? What has he gained now in all these?”

Expressing concern about the broader implications of the crisis, Uwazuruike noted that it was affecting not just Rivers State but also the South-East and South-South regions.

“We are not the only people in Nigeria. Look at other places. I’m not happy about it because it will involve the lives of our people, and that is why I’m speaking out.

“We need to weigh the balance and not just blame Wike. Wike is not the only devil in Nigerian politics. All the governors in Nigeria are corrupt, and no one should play the victim card here,” he added.

The political rift between Fubara and Wike has plunged Rivers State into turmoil, with Tinubu citing security concerns as the basis for declaring a state of emergency.

However, the decision has sparked widespread controversy, with opposition leaders and legal experts questioning its constitutionality.
