Rivers State Police Command, yesterday, arraigned Professor David Ogbonna, of Rivers State University on allegations of unlawful and sexual assault of a female student.
Ogbonna was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Menenen Poromon of Rivers State Magistrate’s court. The charge read:
“You Professor David Ogbonna on May 16, 2022 at Rivers State University campus, Oruwokwo in Obio/Akpor Magisterial District, but triable in Port Harcourt Magisterial District, did unlawfully and indecently assault a female, 29 by inserting your manhood into her vagina, and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 360 of the criminal code CAP 37 Vol.11 of laws of Rivers State, Nigeria 1999.”
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. Following his plea, the defence counsel, Higher King, however, urged the court to grant the defendant bail on self recognition, considering his status in society.
But Emi Jim George, holding brief for the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Rivers State branch, opposed the application, on ground of an alleged threat to the life of the victim.
The Chief Magistrate Poromon, after listening to the parties, granted the accused bail in the sum of N2 million with a surety that must be residing in the magisterial district and adjourned to July 20 for trial.
