The SDP praised the renowned playwright and intellectual for consistently standing on the side of truth, even in difficult times, noting that his courage, patriotism and unwavering advocacy for a better society have made him a beacon of hope in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
According to the party, Soyinka’s life and works continue to illuminate the path toward national transformation, while his intellectual depth and principled leadership remain a source of inspiration for citizens and leaders alike.
The party also recalled Soyinka’s historic achievement as the first African to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986, saying the honour cemented his place among the world’s greatest literary figures and brought pride to Nigeria and the African continent.
The SDP further highlighted its relationship with the literary giant through its National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, whom it described as Soyinka’s protégé, adding that the party continues to draw inspiration from the Nobel Laureate’s lifelong commitment to democracy, justice and nation-building.
The party wished Soyinka many more years of good health and fulfilment, expressing hope that Nigeria, Africa and the wider world would continue to benefit from his wisdom and exceptional contributions to humanity.
