Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, has said that 10 bandits hibernating around some flashpoints in the state have been neutralised by security operatives.

This was as troops eliminated over 20 Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in the outskirts of Maiduguri, Borno State.

According to the commissioner, the joint security forces came in contact with the heavily armed bandits in Kwanan Bataru, the outskirts of Fatika, in Giwa Local Council and engaged them.

Aruwan, in a statement yesterday, disclosed that in a gun duel, 10 of the bandits were eliminated while several others escaped with injuries.

“One Alhaji Abubakar Usman, who might have been kidnapped in a neighbouring state, was rescued by the troops, and is being debriefed at the moment,” he stated. “The bandits, who managed to escape, left behind one revolver, motorcycles, mobile phones, torchlights and some charms. One of the sheds used by the bandits to hold hostages was burnt.

“Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, commended the security forces for taking out the notorious bandits. The governor wishes the troops and personnel more success in the ongoing operations across the state.”

However, the government is appealing to residents of Fatika area to report anyone seeking medical attention for questionable injuries to security agencies on these numbers: 09034000060 and 08170189999.

ALSO, in Borno, a security source told PRNigeria, a news agency, that the operation in the Maiduguri axis took place on Saturday evening when the terrorists attempted to attack a housing estate in the state.

The source said: “Yesterday evening, over 20 insurgents were killed by troops with the support of air assets, as Boko Haram attempted to infiltrate 777 Housing Estate, on the outskirts of Maiduguri metropolis.

“The incident came hours after troops at Banki Junction, Kumshe area, repelled an ambush by another group of terrorists.”
