Stepmother kills four-day-old baby with insecticide
Police in Bauchi have arrested a 24-year-old woman, Furera Abubakar, for allegedly killing a four-day-old baby with insecticide in Ningi Local Council of Bauchi State.
Confirming the development, yesterday, spokesperson for Bauchi State Police Command, Superintendent of Police (SP), Ahmed Wakil, said operatives attached to the command, arrested the suspect in Bantu village, Ningi, for the offence of culpable homicide.
Wakil said the incident was reported to the Ningi Divisional Police Headquarters on August 29, which revealed that the four-day-old baby was born on August 15, and murdered by the suspect on August 19, before the naming ceremony.
According to Wakil, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is co-wife to the nursing mother (victim’s mother).
“The suspect entered the co-wife’s room with insecticide liquid (Gramalin) and applied it to the unhealed baby’s umbilical cord.
“The liquid led to the deterioration of the baby’s health, and eventually led to his death. Investigation is ongoing, after which the suspect will be profiled and charged to court accordingly,” he said.
