Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN) has threatened to shut down MTN Nigeria network services nationwide over alleged anti-labour practices.

Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN) has threatened to shut down MTN Nigeria network services nationwide over alleged anti-labour practices.

The union in a statement signed by its President, Opeyemi Tomori, and General Secretary, Okonu Abdullahi, alleged that MTN Nigeria has continued to undermine the country’s economy through its industrial relations practices designed to emasculate workers.

It threatened that if its demands are not met on or before February 23, 2022, it will mobilise with sister unions affiliated to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for industrial actions.

Calls and text messages placed by The Guardian to MTN Nigeria’s Head of Communications for reaction to the allegations were not responded to.

The union alleged the firm has remained adamant, insisting all workers’ conditions of service, as stated in the company’s policy, must remain and will not negotiated.

The workers alleged that MTN Nigeria is averse to international labour best practices, as depicted in International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conventions 87 and 98.

The union listed precarious work conditions, discriminatory remuneration and inhumane retirement benefit as part of its grievances.

It alleged that the firm claims to respect freedom of association and the rights of its employees to belong to the union, yet refuses to negotiate Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the union.

It demanded that MTN Nigeria management immediately lift the embargo it placed on some workers from membership of the union by communicating to them that they are free to join the union, since membership is voluntary.
