
Barely 50 minutes after the Calabar Bikers Carnival was flagged off, a driver of one of the exotic cars lost control and rammed into a group of spectators gathered at the Bogobiri axis of the carnival route.
This however elicited a bit of protest at the scene of the event. One of the occupants of the vehicles feared that ten persons may have died on the spot. But a carnival official said it was not one of their exotic cars.
An eyewitness, who blamed the incident on lack of proper crowd control, however said the sad incident has abruptly ended the Bikers Carnival.
The seven casualties were rushed to the Navy Reference Hospital by the operatives of the Nigeria Navy who were on ground.
Cross River State Governor, Senator Ben Ayade has expressed sadness over the ugly incident.
A statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Ita, said that while the governor sympathised with the victims and their families, he ordered immediate investigation and arrest of the motorist who is on the run.
According to the statement, the Governor directed the immediate discontinuation of the Bikers parade in honour of the victims of the accident.He promised to ensure that the culprit is arrested and brought to book while he sued for calm.
