Tension in Abia community as gunmen kill two soldiers at checkpoint

The once peaceful Ekenobizi community in Umuopara, Umuahia South Local Council of Abia State, has been plunged into fear and uncertainty following an attack by unknown gunmen on a military checkpoint, which left two soldiers dead.

The Guardian learnt that since the tragic incident, which occurred last Wednesday, many of the community’s youth have fled the area out of fear of possible military retaliation. Residents are now living in apprehension as tension remains high.

Sources in the area hinted at the likelihood of a military response following the deadly attack. In response, Abia State Governor Alex Otti condemned the assault, describing it as unacceptable. He assured citizens that his administration would collaborate closely with security agencies to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

Amid rising tensions, community members have expressed concerns, demanding assurance from the military that no innocent residents would be targeted in any retaliatory actions.

An elder in Ekenobizi, speaking anonymously, revealed that the community has not been the same since the incident, with many living in fear. He called on President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to intervene and ensure the safety of innocent citizens, urging that no one should suffer for crimes they did not commit.

Meanwhile, efforts to get an official statement from the military authorities have been unsuccessful. The Defence Media Operations (DMO) spokesperson, Major General Edward Buba, responded to an enquiry from The Guardian, saying, “Kindly allow me to confirm from the field and revert, please.”
