An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by terrorists on the Maiduguri/Bama road has killed six occupants of a commercial vehicle in Borno State.

Five passengers and the driver were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in ran over the explosive.

A counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, disclosed, yesterday, in Maiduguri that the incident occurred on a rural road between Bama and Kauwuri communities in Konduga Local Council.

He noted: “Most of the motorists and commuters routinely ply the road to other parts of state to buy food and other household items.” 

A military source in Maiduguri stated that the Amir Jaysh of Boko Haram, Alhaji Ari Fusam, coordinated the attack.

“Fusam operates from the Gaizuwa hideout camp, a few kilometres from where the IED was planted in the early hours of yesterday,” said the source.

The military stated that a Toyota Starlet vehicle returning from Adamawa State ran over the planted explosive, killing five passengers on board, while the driver; who was severely injured, died an hour later at a hospital.

Makama noted that the 38-kilometre Bama/Konduga road had been very peaceful, as it had not witnessed any attack in the last six years.

“It is now that the terrorists operating on the south-east fringe of Sambisa Forest resorted to planting IEDs on the Maiduguri/Bama road,” he added.
