There’s no getting away from the fact that the global video games market is huge. In fact, in 2022 it was estimated to be worth a staggering US$237.5 billion. What’s more, it’s set to continue growing according to research carried out by the highly respected management consultancy PwC.

So it’s no wonder that 2023 is set to see a real gold-rush of new games being launched. Whatever genre you’re into, there’s sure to be plenty of options to look forward to playing. So here are seven of the very best coming to a console or mobile device near you this year.

Forspoken

In January ‘23 the global publicity campaign for Forspoken seemed to get into full swing, ensuring that anticipation is high. This exciting new game from Luminous Productions and Square Enix is a classic role player. You are Frey, a young New Yorker who suddenly finds herself plunged into a magical world where she has mysteriously gained some huge and very surprising powers. Early trailers of the game have shown that the standard of graphics are as impressive, if not even more so, than any we’ve seen before. We can probably also rest assured that the story lining and action are set to be just as highly finished.

Hogwarts Legacy

Even though JK Rowling may now be something of a controversial figure thanks to her outspoken comments on social media, the love for the Harry Potter movies, books and even the stage play lives on. So this seems like the perfect time for a long-anticipated Potter RPG to arrive. In this game you find yourself in 1890 aboard the Hogwarts Express being taken to the famous school. Once there you can sidestep the normal process and choose whichever house you want to enter and start making friends. What lays ahead are just the sort of exciting adventures you’d expect, with plenty of magic included.

Gates of Olympus

In recent years the world of online slots and video gaming have steadily been coming together. So the slots of today are a far cry from the simple machines of old. Today, they are heavily themed and include the sorts of bonus features that video games use to keep players engaged. Gates of Olympus, which you can play at sites like Jackpotjoy, is a great example of this trend. It takes you to the legendary home of the Greek gods, Mount Olympus where Zeus rules all around him. Your aim is to win cash prizes in a slot that gives you the chance to claim up to 15 free spins as well as to clinch a pay-out of up to 5,000 times your stake – if you have the luck of the gods on your side!

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Resident Evil is surely one of the most well-established games franchises out there. Now developers Capcom are working hard to use its legacy in a very forward-thinking way. Following on from highly-acclaimed and successful remakes of RE 2 and 3 now it’s the turn of the fourth in the series. The main change is set to be in the enhanced graphics and motion made possible by the latest generation of consoles. Hard-core fans of the series will also be pleased to hear that the various parasites and viruses present in the game-play will be given even more relevance. This should create even stronger connections across the whole RE universe.

Wild Hearts

Monster-hunting games aren’t exactly new, but they are set to be dramatically reinvented with this new release set for the middle of February. That’s because the battles are set to be bigger, the monsters will be more monstrous and the graphics sharper than ever before. Players will also be armed with amazing new weapons and types of trap to deploy as they make their way across the perilous lands of Azuma. This is a realm that has clearly been influenced by the world of feudal Japan where the fearsome Kemono monsters roam free.

Street Fighter 6

Looking ahead to June, the classic arcade street fighting game is set to get a major reboot. Taking things to the next level, the new title is set to bring you no less than three different game modes. First up is Fighting Ground that will include local battles for territory. Then there’s the single-player mode of World Tour. Biggest and best of all is the online lobby mode of Battle Hub that lets you take on combatants from anywhere. There’s also been an expansion of the number of characters to choose from – 18 have been announced so far including six that will be hitting the streets for the very first time.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage

There have been signs on the game players’ forums that many fans have had enough of the Assassin’s Creed’s particular RPG approach. So they will be pleased to learn that the upcoming release will be heading off in a different direction. The main protagonist is Basim who has joined the Hidden Ones to search for answers about the strange visions that haunt him.

So, as you can see, there is plenty to look forward to in 2023. Add to this several big movie franchise tie-ins featuring Star Wars, Spiderman and the much anticipated Avatar and you’re going to have your time cut out keeping up with them all. But it should be a lot of fun along the way!
