Three die, many injured as Oyo park managers, NURTW members clash in Ibadan
Three people were killed and others injured in a clash between suspected members of the Oyo State Park Management System (PMS) and National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the Aliwo area of Ibadan, capital of Oyo State.
The Guardian learnt that property worth millions of naira were destroyed in the fracas, which took place on Tuesday night. It was learnt that the pandemonium started when suspected members of PMS, allegedly engaged NURTW members, also known as Isota boys in a gun duel around Ali Iwo area, and Agodi Gate axis of Ibadan.
Although there were conflicting narratives of what led to the crisis, the State Police Command said investigations were ongoing to unravel the cause of the crisis.
A version narrated that the incident started when members of the PMS, while returning from Challenge, where Governor Seyi Makinde had gone to commission the bus terminal, started shooting into the air.
In the process stray bullets hit some yet-to-be-identified youths in the area, leading to their death. Another source however said members of the PMS led by the Chairman of the Disciplinary committee, Alhaji Mukaila Lamidi aka Auxiliary were attacked by the Isota boys, who were alleged to be on a mission to assassinate Auxiliary.
In other narratives, sources said two groups known as Isota Boys and Were Boys, were the ones attacking passers-by, especially those wearing vests with inscriptions of Governor Seyi Makinde and Auxiliary.
It was alleged that many supporters of Governor Makinde, who were returning from the Bus Terminal commissioning were attacked and suffered damages, which triggered reaction from Auxiliary supporters with the aim of defending and protecting their faithful.
Following the attack and the counter attack, the situation degenerated into full fracas with sporadic gunshot from different angles.
In one of the viral audio messages captured by frightened commuters when the incident was ongoing, a member of the Were Boys, was heard threatening to kill Auxiliary should he appear anywhere in town on Wednesday or at that moment.
When contacted, Public Relations Officer or PMS, Alhaji Emiola Jelili, blamed the NURTW members for the violence. But in a counterclaim, a member of NURTW, blamed the crisis on Auxiliary, saying the PMS chairman started the first phase of crisis at about 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, while he was on his usual convoy to Ojoo for the commissioning of the bus terminal.
At press time, the Police, who confirmed the incident, could not confirm if any arrest had been made.
