The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has dismissed three officers involved in the fatal shooting of a student from the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin. The victim, Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, was shot and killed on September 4, 2024, by the officers, including two Inspectors and a Sergeant.

The dismissed officers, Inspector Abiodun Kayode (AP/No: 233828), Inspector James Emmanuel (AP/No: 287410), and Sergeant Oni Philip (File No: 497868), were found guilty of three serious offences: leaving their assigned post, corrupt practices, and the unlawful or unnecessary exercise of authority.

In a statement, the Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the officers’ dismissal.

“Following a thorough investigation and an internal disciplinary trial, the three officers were found guilty of misconduct. Consequently, they have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force, effective October 4, 2024, and will be prosecuted in court shortly,” she said.

SP Ejire-Adeyemi stressed that the swift and decisive action underscores the commitment of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure justice, professionalism, and accountability within the force.

“Under his leadership, we are resolute in upholding integrity, and any breach of ethical standards, especially in cases involving the loss of life, will be met with the full force of the law.”

The statement further conveyed the Kwara State Police Command’s condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola.

“We share in their grief and remain committed to supporting them during this difficult time,” Ejire-Adeyemi added.
