Thugs invade Ogun SDP governorship campaign, cart away valuables

Governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Otunba Rotimi Paseda in Ogun State.

Armed political thugs, suspected to be members of the opposition parties, yesterday, attacked the campaign team of the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Otunba Rotimi Paseda in Ogun State.

The attack saw party faithful and other people present at an “Empowerment Programme” scampering for safety.

Paseda organised the programme to distribute valuable items, such as gas cookers, sewing machines, hair dryers, refrigerators to party faithful present under his empowerment programme.

The thugs carted away all the items lined up for distribution, thereby ending the programme abruptly.

Trouble started when thugs invaded the venue while Paseda was addressing the crowd.

The situation became uncontrollable when armed policemen at the event prevented the thugs from taking over the podium, a development which led to sporadic shooting into the air by the thugs.

The development brought the  programme to an abrupt end, as security operatives whisked away Paseda  and other prominent personalities at the event.

Paseda later explained to journalists that the attack was premeditated by an unnamed opposition candidate.

To him, the attack is an indication that “ I have become a threat with my growing popularity to the opposition parties in the state. “

He, however, commended the Nigeria Police attached to Ijebu Ode for responding swiftly to disperse the thugs without anybody being injured.
