Ugwuanyi launches N200m healthcare scheme in Enugu

Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has launched the state’s N200m healthcare schemes, saying it was part of his administration’s commitment towards raising the standard of medical care in the state.

He stated that his government also improved manpower by employing several medical doctors and other health professionals to ensure that the hospitals worked in addition to quality healthcare facilities.

Ugwuanyi, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Simon Otuanya, disclosed that since he became governor in 2015, he had prioritised health and education sectors in the state’s yearly budgetary allocations.
He said, “I am delighted as Enugu State joins other states in commencing the Universal Health coverage. We restate our determination to pursue quality health for our people, as you are aware that a healthy nation is a wealthy nation.

“In pursuit of this objective, my government has consistently ensured that the health sector occupy the third position in capital portfolio of our budget at the ministries of health and education.

“Our government has provided N200m as take off grant for the universal health coverage in Enugu State. We have also made a counterpart funding of N100m for the state universal health coverage,” he stated.

He noted that 50 new doctors and other health professionals had been engaged for the state’s free prenatal and postnatal exercise for women.

Speaking, National Secretary of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof. Mohammed Sambo, commended Enugu State for actively pursuing various health intervention schemes to improve the health status of its people.

Sambo, who was represented by the South East Zonal Coordinator of NHIS, Agwunobi Chinasa, promised to assist with all necessary technical backing towards the successful implementation of the programme.

Enugu State Commissioner for health, Prof. Anthony Ugochukwu, said his ministry would ensure better healthcare services for the citizens of the state.

Executive Secretary, Enugu State Universal Health Coverage, Dr. Edith Okolo, commended Ugwuanyi for his commitment towards achieving universal health coverage for the people, adding that commencement of the scheme would mark the end of negative experiences in the state’s health services.
