Umahi, SMBLF mourn Ezeife

Ezeife

The Minister of Work, David Umahi, yesterday joined other Nigerians to mourn the death of the former governor of Anambra State, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, last Thursday, describing him as an icon.

Also, the leadership of the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders’ Forum (SMBLF) yesterday expressed grief over the sudden demise of the former governor.

In his condolence message to the family, Umahi said he received the news of Ezeife’s death with a deep sense of sympathy.

He noted that the former governor was an advocate of selfless leadership and a crusader for the cause of justice and national integration, adding that he was unequivocal on his stand for an egalitarian nation where all Nigerians shall enjoy equal, just and fair treatment notwithstanding their natural, cultural or religious inclinations.

He added: “He was a prominent voice on national conversations. The loss of this dearly nationalist has no doubt created a deep vacuum in the hearts of his loved ones and indeed all who shared in the values of his ideals.

“I convey my deepest condolences to his family and the government and people of Anambra State for the loss of this great iconic leader and national figure who left inspiring life and times worthy of emulation. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace, Amen.”

In statement jointly signed by Chief E.K. Clark, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Chief Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Dr. Pogu Bitrus and Senator Emmanuel Ibok-Essien, the group extolled the virtues of the former governor, describing him as an unshaken believer in the unity and progress of Nigeria.

The statement read: “‘Okwadike’, as he was fondly called, was a founding and staunch member of the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders’ Forum; a strong promoter, and an unshaken believer in the unity and progress of Nigeria, based on equity, fairness and justice.

“We recall that he actively participated in the last meeting of the Forum in Abuja on Thursday, October 26, 2023, where far-reaching decisions were made in the overall interest of the country.

“The Havard-trained economist was a prominent statesman, a politician of exceptional brilliance, high repute and integrity.  He was a man of firm resolve and typical modesty. Ezeife loved his people and Nigeria with passion.

“We will sorely miss his inspiring personality, brilliant ideas, vibrant contributions and steadfast solidarity in our pursuit of an egalitarian Nigerian State that would be fair and just to all irrespective of tribe, religion or political inclination.”

The group extended its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased as well as the Government and people of Anambra State, the Igbo Nation and Nigeria.

“We pray the Almighty God to grant us all the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss and for the peaceful repose of the noble soul of our dearly beloved departed Compatriot,” the statement added.
