The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has received full accreditation for seven academic programmes following the National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation exercise conducted in October and November 2025.
The accreditation, which is valid for five years, was communicated in a letter signed by the NUC Executive Secretary, Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu.
According to the Commission, the exercise was carried out as part of its statutory responsibility to ensure that universities comply with minimum academic standards required for quality teaching, learning, and research.
The programmes granted full accreditation are Forestry and Wildlife Management, Anatomy, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Law, Physics, and Criminology and Security Studies.
The accredited programmes cut across several faculties, including Agriculture, Basic Medical Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Law, Science, and Social Sciences.
The NUC noted that the programmes met the required benchmarks in key areas such as staffing, curriculum implementation, infrastructure, and quality assurance.
With the accreditation status, the affected departments can continue admitting students and running their undergraduate and postgraduate programmes without restrictions for the next five years.
The development also guarantees nationwide recognition of certificates issued by the programmes and ensures that graduates remain eligible for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation.
University authorities described the outcome as a significant boost to the institution’s academic reputation and a reflection of its commitment to maintaining high educational standards.
The accreditation is also expected to provide the university with an opportunity to strengthen its academic offerings, improve learning facilities, and deepen research and innovation activities.
Through its Director of Accreditation, Engr. Abraham Chundusu, the Commission commended the university for attaining the standards required for full accreditation.
The latest achievement further reinforces UNICAL’s standing as one of Nigeria’s leading universities committed to producing skilled graduates and advancing knowledge through quality education and research.
