The Management of Imo State University, Owerri has said it would not condole acts capable of jeopardizing efforts aimed at safeguarding the school community from the dreaded Coronavirus.

This was as hundreds of the varsity students were stopped from gaining entrance into the school for failing to wear face masks.

Others were scolded for not wearing it properly within the university premises.

When the Guardian visited the University Monday morning, it was discovered that majority of the students were reluctant to comply with the Covid-19 precautionary measures.

Many of them were also seen clustering around within the university environs, for one purpose or the other, without observing the Covid-19 protocols.

The school placed bowls with running water and hand sanitizers at all the strategic locations in the university which according to the varsity management was to further encourage strict compliance.

Speaking to the Guardian, the Public Relations Officer of the school, Ralph Njokuobi, said that the school had fumigated the entire classrooms, libraries, hotels and other places as measures to combat the spread of the virus in the school.

“I think on our part as the school management, we have done all the necessary things to protect our students and the entire IMSU community from this dreaded pandemic,” Njokuobi said.

“And we can assure you and the general public that we have done and will continue to do our best to ensure total compliance to the Covid-19 protocols in the school especially among the students.

“We are not leaving any stone unturned in our efforts to safeguard the lives of everyone here. This therefore explains why we are strict in everything concerning this virus.

“For instance, we insisted that no student would be allowed to enter the school or attend any school activity including lectures without wearing his or her facemask.

“We have also arranged the seats in the lecture halls to comply with the two metre social or physical distancing. And as you can see, at all strategic places, we made provisions for washing or sanitizing of hands.

“So there is no single reason why anyone will not comply because defaulters will be severely dealt with.”
