The Borno State Police Command, yesterday, confirmed that unknown gunmen killed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Marte Local Council, SP Pius Sunday. He was shot while responding to a distress call on May 20, at about 11:09 p.m.

Spokesperson for the command, ASP Nahum Daso, said the distress call was from Adam Abatcha, a senior community health extension worker in charge of Maternal and Child Health Clinic, New Marte.

Abatcha had complained to the deceased that six gunmen invaded his house and attempted to abduct him. He, however, managed to escape and run to the police station.

On how the DPO was killed, Daso said: “Sunday mobilised his men to the scene, but sadly the members of the team were ambushed. The DPO was fatally wounded and Inspector Sani Murtala was grazed by a bullet on his thigh.”

He said the injured victim was currently responding to treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), while the remains of the DPO had been deposited at the hospital mortuary.

“The Commissioner of Police, Yusufu Lawal, expresses his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, who was on active service,” he added.
