US Embassy warns Nigerians against birth tourism

The United States (US) Mission in Nigeria has warned Nigerians against traveling to the country for the purpose of giving birth and securing US citizenship for their children.

This warning was contained in a post shared by the US Mission in Nigeria on X on Monday.

In the statement, the US Mission in Nigeria emphasised that visas will be denied to applicants suspected of traveling to the U.S. primarily to give birth and secure U.S. citizenship for their children.

“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S. citizenship is not permitted. Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent,” it wrote.

The US Mission in Jamaica and the US Embassy in Uganda also ssued a similar warning in July. These warnings come amid efforts of the US to modify its visa policies.
