says govt did not spend N10b to release police officer

Imo State Government has debunked reports on social media alleging that the Governor, Hope Uzodimma, urged Igbo youths to support the embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari.

It also dismissed reports alleging that Uzodimma has spent N10 billion to secure release of the police officer standing trial for drug related cases.

In a statement issued, yesterday, by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, the state government described the reports as, ‘’fake news, incoherent and illogical propaganda concocted by social media outfit of a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and former governor of the state, to undermine the popularity of Uzodimma.”

The statement accuses an unnamed former governor of the state as being behind the fake news. According to the statement, Uzodimma, being a beneficiary of the rule of law, could not have declared Kyari innocent of charges against him when that job belongs exclusively to the judiciary.

He described the report as handiwork of desperate, unrepentant and amateur authors, noting that the governor had been a respecter of the rule of law, integrity and independence of the judiciary.

The statement reads: “It is ridiculous to suggest that the governor budgeted N10 billion for the release of Kyari, when everyone knows how prudent and accountable he is with resources of the state.”
