Police arraign suspected hoodlum for stabbing KAI official

An Ebute Metta Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos yesterday remanded a university student, Mabel Bassey, in prison for bathing her neighbour with hot water and killing him. Bassey is to be remanded at Ikoyi Prisons pending advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Bassey, a student of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and resident of Surulere Street, Ojo, Lagos, was arraigned before Magistrate Bola Folarin-Williams on a charge of murder.
She was alleged to have poured hot water on Efe Okotie, 38, on July 2 at their residence, which resulted in his death.

According to the prosecutor, Inspector Olatunde Kehinde, the deceased had advised Bassey to desist from her promiscuous lifestyle, which did not go down well with her.

“Out of anger, she bathed the late Okotie with hot water. The deceased died six days after the incident due to the severe burns he suffered,” he told the court.

The offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011, which prescribes death sentence for offenders. The case has been adjourned to November 4.

In another development, scores of hoodlums allegedly extorting money from fun seekers at the Bar Beach in Victoria Island, Lagos State, have attacked an official of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) Brigade, Fatai Lawal, stabbing him 10 times.

Leader of the hoodlums, identified as Joseph Ogundele, was arrested by the police and charged before the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court on a two-count charge of inflicting injury on a KAI official.

The police disclosed in the charge sheet that the hoodlums were fighting on the road at the Bar Beach when KAI officials intervene to disperse them.

Some of the hoodlums did not take kindly to this as they attacked the officials and stabbed them with dangerous weapons such as broken bottles, stones and sticks.
One of the KAI officials was stabbed 10 times all over the body.

A distress call was made to the DPO in charge of Bar Beach Police Division, Victoria Island, CSP Olusegun Ajamolaya, who sent a team of policemen to arrest the troublemakers. Joseph Ogundele was arrested while others escaped. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The prosecuting police officer, Inspector Rotimi Sumonu, said the offences were punishable under sections 166(a) and 243 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the alleged crime and Magistrate J.O.A Adepoju admitted him to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Adepoju adjourned the case till 18 August, for mention and ordered that the defendant be kept at Ikoyi prison, Lagos pending when he will fulfill his bail conditions.
