Records 61.54% pass rate with English, Maths

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), yesterday, released the results of the Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for school candidates.

Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, Dr Amos Dangut, who announced the result during a media briefing held at the Council’s National Office in Yaba, Lagos, said that 1,959,668 candidates from 24,207 schools registered for the examination across the country, saying that only 1,950,726 candidates sat for the examination.

He said that 61.54 per cent of the candidates obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

He noted that 1,687,378 candidates, representing 86.50 per cent, obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects with or without English Language and Mathematics.

The examination, according to him, was also administered to candidates from some schools in Benin Republic, Cote d’Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea where the Nigerian curriculum for Senior Secondary Schools is being used.

According to the released results, 1,834,695 candidates, representing 94.05 per cent, have their results fully processed and released, while 116,031 candidates, representing 5.96 per cent, have one or more of their subjects still being processed.

Of the 1,200,514 candidates, 558,883, representing 28.65 per cent, were male, while 641,631, representing 32.89 per cent, were female candidates.

He, however, disclosed that this year’s result witnessed a 1.42 per cent decline from the 2025 results.

The WAEC Head of National Office, while speaking on examination malpractices, said the results of 167,486 candidates, representing 8.59 per cent of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.

He said this is 1.11 per cent lower than the 9.7 per cent recorded in the WASSCE for school candidates in 2025.

Dangut said all the cases are being investigated and reports of the investigations would be presented to the appropriate committee of the Council for consideration and final decisions, adding that the committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates through their various schools.

He said that candidates affected by these decisions could call for redress of their malpractice cases via https://waecinternational.org/complaints.
