‘Where Is Wole Soyinka?’ Why Nigerians are looking for the Nobel laureate

The popular phrase “Where is Wole Soyinka?” is being used by many Nigerians to ask Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka for his opinion on X.

This trend can be attributed to President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency, which suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs. Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the state House of Assembly.

With a military presence now at the Rivers State Government House and tensions rising, many Nigerians are eager to hear Soyinka’s perspective, given his long history of speaking out against government overreach.

At 90, Soyinka has spent over five decades as one of Nigeria’s most vocal critics of dictatorship, corruption, and democratic failures. He has established a reputation for standing up to military rule and denouncing violations of human rights.

However, his silence toward Tinubu’s declaration on the Rivers crisis, despite its implications for the country’s democracy, has led to a backlash, with Nigerian netizens accusing him of selective activism.

So, Wole Soyinka still has NOTHING to say about his chum Tinubu and the way he is running Nigeria? Lmao!!!!

Wole Soyinka is silent
Emmanuel Adeboye is silent
Why?
Because Tinubu is their brother, whatever Tinubu does is right in their faces.
But let someone else who isn’t their brother do same thing, you’ll see them in the streets with placards
