The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla in Enugu State has inaugurated a 14-member UNTH Foundation, as part of programmes to tackle the challenges in the country’s tertiary health institutions.

Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Prof. Obinna Onodugo, who spoke at the unveiling of members of the foundation chaired by the former governor of Enugu State, Sullivan Chime, yesterday, said UNTH was grappling with infrastructure, medical facilities, staff training and welfare challenges, among others.

He stated that one of the biggest challenges of the hospital was the large number of indigent patients, who could not afford to pay their bills, stressing that the development was restricting the hospital from settling for supplies of consumables and medications in the treatment of such patients.

Onodugo stated that the hospital, which had spent over 25 years in its present location was faced with irregular water supply, energy supply, poor condition of wards, inadequate number of wards to cater for the increasing number of patients and irregular supply of consumables.
