Woman, 33 arraigned for assaulting friend over ₦150,000 debt
The police on Tuesday arraigned a 33-year-old woman, Charity Abraham, before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting her friend, Miss Felicia Sabo, over an unpaid debt of ₦150,000.
Abraham, a resident of Karji, Kaduna, was charged with assault.
The prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the incident occurred at the defendant’s residence on March 22 at about 9:15 a.m.
According to Leo, an argument broke out between the defendant and the complainant over the alleged debt, during which Abraham punched Sabo repeatedly and inflicted serious bodily injuries.
The prosecutor further stated that the altercation was triggered by the defendant’s alleged refusal to repay the ₦150,000 debt she owed the complainant.
According to him, the offence contravenes Section 240 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 240 prescribes three years imprisonment for anyone found liable of assault, occasioning harm.
The defendant, however, denied the charge.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
Emmanuel said the surety must have a reasonable means of livelihood and should be resident within the jurisdiction of the court with traceable and verifiable work address.
The magistrate adjourned the case until May 6 for hearing.
