In what appears to be a cyber attack targeted at Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, some Nigerian X users are trending the hashtag #AkpotiLied on the microblogging platform.

The Guardian’s correspondent saw numerous posts by X users using the tag and claiming the senator’s sexual harassment allegations against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, are fictitious.

Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended on Thursday by the Senate for six months over her sexual harassment allegations against the Senate President.

Before then, she had a scuffle with Akpabio over seating arrangements. Following that incident, the Kogi senator told Arise TV that she had been sexually harassed by Akpabio.

She added that Akpabio was harsh towards her in the senate because she refused his advances.

Since she made that claim, many politicians, including the deputy chief whip of the senate, Peter Nwebonyi, have criticised her for going public with the allegations.

These posts and trending hashtags are new additions to the criticisms and attacks she has battled since she accused the Senate President of sexually harassing her in February.

The Guardian’s correspondent also noticed that many of these posts contained the same content despite being posted by different users.

Some of them attached videos of Reno Omokri speaking about Akpoti-Uduaghan accusing him of sexual harassment in 2014.

One of the posts read, “False accusations can ruin lives. Natasha Akpoti’s past actions are concerning. #AkpotiLied”.

Another post read, “Reno Omokri’s case shows that false accusations can be debunked with evidence”.

One X user also said, “Reno Omokri recalls how Natasha Akpoti falsely accused him of sexual harassment in 2014. He provided evidence to prove his innocence, leading her to delete all traces of the accusations. Past behaviour predicts future actions”.

In a now-deleted post, popular social media influencer and comedian Brain Jotter charged his followers to trend the hashtag under the guise of a giveaway.

The now-deleted post read, “Once you see this just reply. If I credit you 200k, is it enough till month end? Reply adding the hashtag #AkpotiLied.”

In another post, he wrote, “If I credit you, what are you buying first? Tell me with the #AkpotiLied and you may be lucky”.
