Yahaya Bello falls from moving vehicle, sustains injury
The incident left the governor’s foot bandaged with Plaster of Paris (POP) to protect the broken foot.
A statement yesterday by Director of Media and Publicity to the governor, Kingsley Fanwo, confirmed the incident, saying Bello actually injured his left foot while alighting from his car.
“We wish to refute rumours that Governor Bello is either hospitalised or incapacitated. He missed his foot on Friday March 30, 2018 while alighting from a vehicle and injured his left foot.
“He had a fracture on his left foot while his arms suffered bruises due to the fall, as the car dragged him for a while before some bystanders raised an alarm, which made the driver to stop the car,” the statement reads.
An eyewitness said Bello, who was in his BMW car attempted to put his foot on the footrest to throw money into the crowd but slipped and fell while the car was in motion.
He further disclosed that the car dragged the governor to some distance before some people and his security personnel rescued him.
It has become routine for the governor to throw money at crowds while acknowledge cheers from supporters by the roadside on his return to Lokoja.
People now ambush him each time they get information that he would return to try their luck at scrambling to grab naira notes they could lay their hands on.
They were, however, not lucky last Thursday, as they could not get the money because of the incident.
Meanwhile, Bello still received the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara at Government House, Lokoja.
He could hardly stand up on his seat throughout Dogara’s visit, which some detractors misunderstood for arrogance and disrespect for the Speaker.
It was learnt that he was taken to one of the private hospitals in Abuja for treatment.
However, the incident prevented Bello from attending the burial of the late Deputy Majority Leader, Buba Jibril, who represented Lokoja/KotonKarfi Federal Constituency at the national assembly.
The Deputy Governor, Simon Achuba, represented him at the event.
