NECO, please correct these anomalies

As an organisation saddled with conducting national exams for our teeming teenagers, one finds it odd that so many things as little as they seem are not in place. This is against the background

Sir: I write as a concerned parent to point out some things wrong with NECO in its conduct of its current Senior School Certificate Examinations nationwide.

As an organisation saddled with conducting national exams for our teeming teenagers, one finds it odd that so many things as little as they seems are not in place. This is against the background that a similar body, WAEC, is more thorough in its conduct of the same exams.

First, the body did not provide calculators for students to use during the exams. WAEC provided calculators that have basic functions for their own exams. It is the WAEC calculator that these children are using for NECO exams. Is this not odd, that both bodies charged the same amount for the exams, yet NECO could not provide basic calculators.

Second, the body did not provide ID cards where candidates’ exam numbers and centre numbers are written for easy reference. Students had to be copying exam numbers from supervisors and we know that mistakes can easily arise from such an exercise. WAEC had an arrangement where candidates name and numbers were already provided on their answer sheets.

The ID cards also had PIN and serial numbers for result checking. NECO wants parents to buy scratch cards to check results by not providing this. This is unacceptable.

As I write, because the exam was shifted because of curfew in some states, Lagos candidates are yet to write economics and a new date is not on the timetable. Also, Commerce and Chemistry practicals are not on the timetable.

I sincerely hope that the body will rise up and do the needful.

Could it be because of these anomalies you find so many parents refusing to register their wards for this exam.

NECO please, act fast.
