Anambra guber: UK reaffirms support for Nigeria’s democracy

British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Richard Montgomery, has reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s democratic processes.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said 2.8 million registered voters were expected to cast their ballot in the Anambra State governorship election on November 8, 2025.

However, the Gen Abubakar Abdulsalami-led National Peace Committee will be deploying the newly inaugurated Election Information Technology Hub in its security and peace process in the Anambra poll.

During a two-day official visit to Anambra, which concluded on Wednesday, which brought him in contact with key stakeholders ahead of the election, Montgomery met with Governor Charles Soludo, other gubernatorial candidates, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), the Commissioner of Police, and civil society representatives.

The visit, according to the British High Commission, aimed to underscore the UK’s interest in promoting peaceful, transparent, inclusive, and credible elections across Nigeria.

According to the envoy, the UK does not support any political party or candidate, but focuses on strengthening the integrity of the electoral process.

Discussions during the visit covered a range of election-related issues, including technical and logistical preparations for 5,720 polling units across the state, security concerns in the 21 local councils, factors likely to affect voter turnout, and arrangements for election observation on polling day.

INEC said about 140,000 new voters were registered in the state, while many others received approvals to transfer their voter’s card to the state.

Also, the Police Command in the state vowed to flood the entire state with its men to forestall any form of misdemeanour before, during and after the election.

The REC, Dr Queen Elizabeth Agwu, said the commission would deploy 5,903 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for the election, while 978 BVAS will be kept as a reserve.

Agwu disclosed that 16 political parties and governorship candidates had been cleared for the November 8 election.

The REC, who spoke at the Situation Room Dialogue Session/Strategy meeting on Anambra 2025 Governorship Election in Abuja, insisted that BVAS had not posed a problem during elections in Anambra, saying the idea of having reserve BVAS was to take care of unforeseen situations.

The Abdulsalami peace committee launched the Election Security Information Hub on Wednesday to enhance its intervention work.

The hub is expected to provide verifiable data, which the committee will be using to engage critical stakeholders in the security and electoral process.

Speaking at the inauguration in Abuja, Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (rtd), who represented Abdulsalami, said there must be peace in the country for credible elections.

He stressed that the strength of democracy is the credibility of elections and the confidence in the process, noting, however, that every election circle had continued to throw up gaps in security management.

The inaugurated hub, he added, is aimed at correcting those identified gaps.
