Colombian VP’s visit to Nigeria, ‘gateway to a new chapter’, says Shettima

Colombian Vice President Francia Márquez arrived in Abuja on Saturday for a three-day official visit aimed at deepening ties between Nigeria and Colombia, marking a new phase in diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

The delegation, which included cabinet ministers, senior officials, business leaders, and Márquez’s spouse, Rafael Ocoró, held a gala dinner on Sunday at the Presidential Villa in her honour.

Vice President Kashim Shettima described the visit as “the beginning of a new dawn” in bilateral relations.

“This historic visit and tomorrow’s engagements will be the gateway to a new chapter,” Shettima said. “More than ever, Nigeria is inspired to plant the seeds of trust, water them with dialogue, and nurture them into fruits of prosperity that our children and grandchildren shall one day harvest.”

Shettima recalled that Nigeria and Colombia have maintained diplomatic relations for more than 51 years and emphasised that their connection extends beyond diplomacy to shared values and a commitment to humanity. He expressed optimism that the visit would strengthen political cooperation, economic ventures, and cultural exchanges between the nations.

In her remarks, Márquez described the trip as both strategic and historic. She highlighted plans to enhance collaboration in social justice, peace, tourism, health, culture, and education, while using Colombia’s position in South America to promote trade links with Africa. She also conveyed President Gustavo Petro’s condolences to Nigeria over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, said the dinner provided an opportunity to celebrate the longstanding friendship between the two countries while showcasing the cultural richness of Nigeria and Colombia through music, art, and cuisine.

The visit is scheduled to include strategic talks with Nigerian counterparts to discuss expanding cooperation in key sectors, reflecting both nations’ commitment to reinforcing bilateral ties.
