The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has told one of its presidential aspirants, Prof. Jerry Gana, that former governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, remains its presidential candidate ahead of the 2019 general elections.

In a statement signed on Sunday in Abuja by its acting director of media and publicity, Hon. Yemi Akinbode, the party alleged the violation of its constitution by Gana and his campaign team.

He frowned at the latest statement issued by Dr. Ike Neliaku, consultant to Gana’s campaign group, challenging the emergence of Duke as the party’s presidential candidate.

Akinbode said: “The party has also noted that as soon as Dr. Neliaku, Prof. Jerry Gana’s consultant, realised that hanging on the SDP constitution to disqualify Mr. Duke does not hold water, he resorted to attempting to discredit the entire exercise by raising fathom irregularities. This is unwarranted.”

According to him, SDP fully understands the enormity of the task ahead to salvage Nigeria, adding that everyone matters in the project to move Nigeria forward.

“Therefore, the party does not intend to join issues with Prof. Gana; but it is important to set the records straight in the public interest and in the face of misrepresentations by Dr. Neliaku,” he noted.

The Guardian gathered that the party has reaffirmed Duke as its duly elected presidential candidate, and that his name and that of his running mate have been forwarded to the Independent National electoral Commission (INEC).
