Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has publicly placed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, at the head of the Rainbow Coalition. He told supporters to stop pledging loyalty to different political figures.
Fubara made the declaration while addressing supporters at the unveiling of the coalition’s candidates in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. Wike was in attendance at the event.
The governor named Wike as the leader of the Rainbow Coalition and referred to him as his “Oga.” He asked members of the coalition to stop identifying with different political figures as their leaders.
Fubara said some members who supported him during the political crisis in Rivers still maintain separate leadership identities, despite the new political arrangement. He said the different groups have now come together under one umbrella and should no longer see themselves as separate political camps.
Speaking on the practice, the governor said he was aware of what happens in the meetings of some of those who followed him during the crisis.
“I’m aware that there are some issues when some persons who followed me when we had the crisis, when you’re in your meeting, you say, ‘my leader, my leader’.”
He then stressed that the coalition now operates as a single entity, which, according to him, leaves no room for any question over who the leader is.
“We are now in one house. And because we have one house, there is no issue about who is the leader.”
Fubara added that although some members might still see him as their leader, they should recognise Wike‘s position in the coalition.
“I might be your Oga, but we have a common leader now.”
The governor urged members to resolve the issue and move forward as one political family. He cautioned against statements that could suggest competing leadership structures within the alliance.
Fubara asked that the matter be settled at the unveiling of the coalition’s candidates in Port Harcourt, so that it does not resurface in the course of the coalition’s activities.
“So please, going forward, this issue of ‘my leader, my leader, my leader’—I want it resolved here.”
