Kogi APC adopts direct guber primary as court voids delegates’ list

All Progressives Congress (APC) has adopted direct primary to pick its governorship candidate in Kogi State. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is holding the gubernatorial election on November 11, 2023.
The party informed the electoral umpire and aspirants of its decision to opt for direct primary in a letter dated April 6, 2023 and signed by Acting National Chairman, Senator Abubakar Kyari.
The letter reads in part: “We refer to our earlier letter dated January 25, 2023, with reference no: APC/NHDQ/INEC/19/023/191, wherein we notified the Commission of the mode of primary election for the conduct of the gubernatorial primary in Kogi State.
“However, our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reviewed modalities for conduct of the primary, and has, therefore, resorted to adopt the direct mode of primary election instead of the indirect mode as earlier communicated.
“The date for conduct of the primary election still remains Friday, April, 14, 2023.
“Following the above, there shall be a Special Congress to ratify the candidate with the highest number of votes at the primary, scheduled for Saturday, April 15, 2023.”
MEANWHILE, an Abuja Federal High Court, yesterday, nullified the state APC delegates’ list for the governorship primary. Justice James Omotosho, while delivering judgment, voided the ward and local government congresses said to have held on February 7 on the grounds that they were not conducted in compliance with the Electoral Act 2022 and the party’s constitution.
However, stakeholders have said the ruling is an academic exercise, since the party had adopted direct primary mode.
