Ondo guber tribunal: APC, Aiyedatiwa knew verdict ahead — PDP’s Ajayi

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the November 16, 2024, Ondo State governorship election, Agboola Ajayi, has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had prior knowledge of the favourable judgement delivered by the election petition tribunal.

Ajayi claimed that APC supporters arrived at the Ondo State High Court Complex in a celebratory mood before the verdict was read, suggesting foreknowledge of the outcome.

Last Wednesday, the tribunal led by Justice Benson Ogubu dismissed the petitions filed by the PDP and four other parties, describing them as “worthless and unmeritorious.”

Ajayi had contested the eligibility of Aiyedatiwa’s deputy, Olayide Adelami, alleging inconsistencies in the WAEC certificate he submitted to INEC.

Reacting to the judgement, Ajayi expressed disappointment, insisting that the evidence and exhibits presented were not given due consideration. He vowed to challenge the decision at the Court of Appeal.

“We feel disappointed that we didn’t get justice at this level. However, we remain committed to pursuing our case through the legal framework to ensure justice is served,” Ajayi stated.

He added that the PDP had reviewed the judgement and found it lacking in proper analysis of critical details, promising that “no stone will be left unturned” in seeking redress.

The former deputy governor urged party members to remain resolute despite the APC’s apparent confidence in the tribunal’s outcome, saying, “Justice shall reign in our state and nation.”

In response, the APC condemned Ajayi’s remarks, accusing him of attempting to discredit the judiciary. The party’s Director of Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro, said the PDP’s stance was a “reckless assault” on the judiciary’s integrity.

“The PDP’s reaction stems from frustration over their loss. If the verdict had gone in their favour, they would have praised the judiciary,” Otaloro said, urging the PDP to respect the democratic process.
