Human Rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) has called on the youths to wake up to the challenges of rebuilding Nigeria. The legal practitioner, while reviewing the evolution of the Nigerian state also gave a damning remark that bad leadership has hampered the country’s wheel of progress.

Speaking recently during a symposium organised to mark 43rd birthday of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, the lawyer said, “With a few exceptions, most of those that have been privileged to rule the country are her worst enemies.

He accused many of the leaders of insincerity and tendency to steal her resources to the detriment of the nation’s development and progress of her citizens.

According to him, “Instead of working assiduously to improve the welfare of the people, Nigerian leaders have engaged themselves in selfish agenda, which contributed greatly to inhibition of human capacity development and spreading poverty, hunger and starvation.

“Our leaders since 1960 are the enemies of our people. But, the future is for the youth and they have to work in synergy with advocates of youth emancipation in the country to guarantee the socio-economic growth of Nigeria.”

Falana however commended the Ooni for lending support to the calls for the restructuring the country, saying, “The global peace through Ooni’s trip across the world, within the time he ascended the throne, has not only restored peace to Yorubaland but also brought about unity and cooperation among Southwest traditional institutions.”

The human rights lawyer also tasked the leadership of Nigeria on the need to perfect strategies to end dependence on oil.

According to him, “We need to explore technological innovations to prepare for the economic survival of the nation. We can’t blame God for making our case so uncomfortable.”

Oba Ogunwusi in his remark promised to continue to pursue agenda that would benefit the youths, as he also counseled them to seize the initiative and lead well whenever the opportunity is given.
