PDP crisis: BoT seeks urgent NEC meeting

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the People’s democratic party (PDP) on Thursday charged the party’s national working committee to urgently convene a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to address the crisis within the party.

The NEC meeting which was earlier scheduled to be held last month was postponed till the 24th of October, 2024 due to the state congresses which were held between August and September, 24.

Chairman of the PDP BoT, Senator Adulphus Wabara, made the recommendation at a meeting of the BOT in Abuja on Thursday.

“At this critical juncture in our party’s trajectory, I believe it is imperative, and I believe I’m speaking the minds of my colleagues in the board that we convey a meeting of the National Executive Council Committee NEC as scheduled for the 24th of October this year,” Wubara said.

“This will allow us to address pressing matters and strategize on the way forward for the PDP, especially as we gear up to future elections and prepare to strengthen our internal structures.

“However, as we continue on this journey, let us remember that the future of our party and indeed our country depends on the unity, integrity and hard work of each of us.

“The PDP remains the beacon of hope for millions of Nigerians, and it is our duty to ensure that we remain true to the principles upon which this great Party was founded. If the PDP Board of Trustees is kicked out of politics of Nigeria, then Nigeria is gone.”

Wabara also urged all members invited by the party’s disciplinary committee to present themselves to the committee, stressing that the party remained supreme.

He disclosed that the BoT held a significant meeting with the governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, in August, where issues around the political situation in the state and its effect on the party were discussed.

The BoT also met with the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed separately in pursuit of peace and unity for the party, Wabara said.

He drew attention to complaints that arose from the conduct of the party’s congresses pointing out that those complaints ought to be addressed.

“The Board of Trustees has also received reports that in some states, these congresses were not conducted in full accordance with the guidelines of our great party. In some instances, the congresses did not even hold as scheduled,” he said.

“These discrepancies are of serious concern and it is essential that we address them immediately. Therefore we are calling on the National Working Committee to ensure that these issues are swiftly resolved.

“It is crucial that any deviations from PDP guidelines are corrected, and where congresses did not hold new dates should be scheduled to ensure all party members have a fair and transparent opportunity to participate in the democratic process.”
