The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged party members to remain calm and patient amidst recent developments, including an Abuja High Court judgment that affirmed Julius Abure as chairman.

He stressed the importance of unity and addressing pressing issues affecting Nigerians. This comes after a meeting with Governor Alex Otti, the Caretaker Chairman, and Secretary of the Labour Party to discuss the party’s leadership crisis.

He explained that the crisis involves Julius Abure, whose tenure as national chairman reportedly elapsed on June 10, 2024. The party’s constitution dictates the removal process, and Obi clarified that Abure’s removal was in line with the constitution.

Writing on his X-handle, he said, “Yesterday, Governor Alex Otti @alexottiofr and I, along with the Caretaker Chairman and Secretary of the Labour Party, convened to discuss and review recent developments, including the judgment delivered by an Abuja High Court on the same day.

“I urge all members of the Labour Party to remain calm and patient as we continue to engage in discussions and consultations.

“Our goal is to emerge stronger and more unified, standing together as one united front. We must not allow this to divert us from addressing the pressing issues affecting our people today.

“We have always known that the task of creating a new Nigeria that is possible will not come without challenges.”

This was just as the Caretaker Committee, headed by Senator Nenadi Usman, has decided to appeal the court ruling that upheld Abure’s position as national chairman. This resolution followed consultations with key members, including Mr. Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti, who discussed the implications of the Federal High Court’s decision.

Senator Usman urged party members to remain calm and focused on reconciliation as they tackle the legal challenges and strive to enhance unity within the party. The Caretaker Committee’s involvement aims to address the ongoing internal disputes and strengthen the party’s unity moving forward.
