The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has urged Yoruba to preserve their cultural heritage and traditions, noting that their history and culture are in danger of being lost forever if not urgently protected.

The Yoruba generalissimo gave the charge, yesterday, during the celebration of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) 30th anniversary held in Lagos State.

He said that the Yoruba people’s rich history, customs and traditions were the foundation upon which their future success is built, adding that it is crucial to protect and celebrate their unique cultural identity.

He, however, lamented that the forces of modernisation and cultural erosion is becoming a threat to why many have abandoned their origins and roots.

Adams, who lauded the commitment of OPC in the last 30 years, especially in ensuring safety of life and property in the South-West region, urged the Federal Government to consider partnership with the group to end the prevalent insecurity across the country.

He said:” OPC is one of those groups promoting the use of herbs both for medicinal and other positive purposes. Many Yoruba, as a result of their religion, believe that all these things are sins, whereas the drugs we use are from those local herbs.”

“Let’s cherish what we have and stop throwing away what is of benefit to all of us because of religion.

“Today is a day we have set aside to dine and wine with the OPC on the occasion of its 30th anniversary. OPC is a special group whose impacts have been greatly felt across the country. This milestone is a collective achievement of all members of the group that have played a vital part in our journey to this point.”
