The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over his comments against former Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as someone with zero political value and a political liability .

The party accused Wike of attempting to convince residents that the 2027 general election is already decided.

Wike made the comments on Tuesday during a media chat with journalists in Abuja.

The party described as ironic Wike’s repeated attacks on opposition figures despite his insistence that they pose no electoral threat, arguing that such actions reflect anxiety rather than confidence.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Chizy Enyi, the ADC said Wike’s attempt to rewrite political history would not diminish Amaechi’s contributions to governance and national politics.

“The Minister’s attempt to rewrite political history will not erase the undeniable fact that Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi remains one of the most consequential political leaders to emerge from Rivers State. His record in governance, public service and national leadership speaks for itself and does not require validation from those who measure politics solely by personal loyalty and political convenience,” the statement said.

The party added that Wike’s repeated references to previous elections ignored the reality that every election is shaped by prevailing political circumstances and the will of the electorate.

“Every election is unique, and 2027 will be no exception,” it stated.

The ADC argued that Rivers people were more concerned about the nation’s economic challenges, insecurity, unemployment, poor infrastructure and the welfare of citizens than what it described as endless political quarrels and personality clashes.

According to the party, these are the issues that should occupy the attention of public office holders.

It also criticised what it described as Wike’s attempt to portray himself as the sole determinant of Rivers State’s political future.

“Rivers State belongs to its people, not to any individual. No one possesses the exclusive right to determine how Rivers people will vote,” the statement added.

The ADC said it remained committed to providing credible leadership, responsible governance and practical solutions to the challenges confronting Rivers State and the country.

“We will continue to engage Rivers people with our vision and programmes rather than descend into unnecessary exchanges of insults,” it said.

Responding to Wike’s claim that only one political platform could win Rivers State in 2027, the party insisted that the outcome of any election would be determined by voters, not by one person or political declarations.

“As for the boast that only one political party can win Rivers State, democracy is decided by the electorate, not by media declarations. The people will have the final say in 2027,” the statement said.

The ADC urged the FCT minister to focus on the responsibilities of administering the nation’s capital and allow Rivers people to exercise their democratic rights without intimidation, propaganda or political grandstanding.

It expressed confidence that “truth, performance and the will of the people” would ultimately prevail in the 2027 elections.
