Rivers LG poll: APP thanks supporters after landslide victory
The Action Peoples Party (APP) has expressed gratitude to Rivers State people and party faithful for their support in the just-concluded local government chairmanship elections in the state.
Recall that on Saturday, APP, in a landslide victory, won 22 chairmanship positions out of 23 in the local government area elections.
The Chief Election Officer of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli, made this known on Saturday evening in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
Following the announcement, residents of the state erupted in celebration as supporters of the party and the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) trooped out to dance.
Some of the locals who spoke to journalists expressed their delight at the victory, saying that they were hopeful that it would end the oppression by some political actors hell-bent on destabilising the state.
Recall that the PDP withdrew from the October 5 polls due to a deepening political rift between the camps of the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and that of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Reacting to the victory, the national chairman of APP, Barr. Uchenna Nnadi, expressed his gratitude to Rivers people for believing in the party and voting for the party despite attempts to secure court injunctions to stop the exercise.
He assured the Rivers people that APP was committed to liberating them from oppression and victimisation, as well as transforming the LGAs.
Also assuring that the party would bring positive change, Nnadi told the people that the elected chairmen would work for their overall well-being.
Nnadi said, “I’m happy and elated about the landslide victory. I thank God, and I thank Rivers people for believing in the Action People’s Party, APP, despite attempts by some selfish individuals who are obsessed with holding on to power that doesn’t belong to them.
“Their attempts to secure baseless court injunctions failed woefully; Rivers people have spoken. And like I assured you before election day, a vote for APP will end political oppression in Rivers State. I hereby welcome all party faithful. Let’s get to work and give the Rivers Local Government the positive change they are yearning for.”
