Why I quit Peoples Democratic Party, by Akpabio

Godswill Akpabio

Former Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, yesterday officially declared for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and pledged to take the people of Akwa Ibom State and the South-South zone to the centre for more visibility.

The former governor of Akwa Ibom State formally defected from the PDP to APC at a rally in Ikot Ekpene township stadium, saying he decided to join the APC because he discovered that President Muhammadu Buhari “is a man of integrity and a nationalist.’ ’

Akpabio said that he decided to join a party that would sweep away poverty and impunity, insisting that that he joined APC to help salvage the country.

“The country is at war and all the hands must be on deck to salvage the situation and not to aggravate it.

As keepers of national emergency, everyone should put heads together. I decided to join to emancipate and help the people, he said.

But the Ikot Ekpene senatorial district of Akwa Ibom State yesterday withdrew endorsement for Akpabio, as he formerly declared for the APC yesterday
Responding, National Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus, has said it was unfortunate that Akpabio chose to walk against the tide and the peoples will.

While stressing that Akpabio has endangered his political career by his move to the APC, Secondus said he found it strange that anybody would go into a sinking ship at a time when others were leaving it.

He made the remark in a statement yesterday, saying whatever caused Akpabio’s action must have been for self-preservation and not borne out of any rational strategic political decision.

He said Akpabio’s decision does not enjoy the blessing of Akwa Ibom people, whose mandate he enjoyed for eight years as governor and nearly four years as senator.

Meanwhile, six members of Kano State House of Assembly loyal to representative of Kano Central senatorial district, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaker of the House, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, read the defectors letter to members at plenary yesterday.

“It became imperative for us to leave the APC based on the premise that the party has failed to meet the aspirations and yearnings of the people they represent,” they said.

Rurum named the defectors as Yusuf Babangida Suliaman representing Gwale, Rabiu Saleh (Gwarzo), Zubairu Mahmud (Madobi), Yusuf Abdullahi Falgore (Rogo), Hamza Sule Bichi (Bichi) and Isiaku Ali Danja (Gezawa).

Also, National Organising Secretary of the Reformed-All Progressives Congress (R-APC), Mahmud T. Liman, has defected to the PDP.

Liman, State Chairman of the R-APC, Sada Ilu, and other members of the group, defected in Katsina State yesterday.
