Engineers seek fire safety measures in public facilities


Disturbed by recent upsurge in fire outbreaks the country, the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Victoria Island branch has implored Nigerians to become more conscious about fire safety in public facilities.

The society said this during its 2021 fire prevention advocacy campaign, held at the Oniru market in Lagos. The sensitisation was held in conjunction with, the Federal Fire Service Commission and the leadership of Oniru market led by the Baba Oloja, Saliu Arowolo.

The move, which was championed by the chairman of the branch, John Audu, was led by the chairman, Service to Our Society (SOS) Committee, Dr. Ebieri Otuaro, who urged business owners, operators and market women to be abreast with all fire safety procedures, principles and regulations to reduce incident of fire in the society.

The branch chairman, John Audu, envisions anti-market fire sensitisation programme that will provide solutions to societal problems by creatively applying engineering principles and leadership qualities.

Speaking during the exercise, Otuaro said there was need for sensitisation exercise to stem the tides and its debilitating consequences on market men and women, citizens and the economy, adding that fire incidents had resulted in the loss of billions of naira worth of goods.

The publicity secretary of the branch, Babatunde James, who spoke on basic fire-fighting and prevention in conjunction with officials of the fire service used the occasion to demonstrate appropriate ways of putting out fire using blanket and extinguishers.
