FG inaugurates Nguru ecological intervention committee

The Federal Government has inaugurated a presidential committee on the implementation of the Nguru Ecological Intervention Programme to tackle climate change and environmental challenges and food security in the country.

The Federal Government has inaugurated a presidential committee on the implementation of the Nguru Ecological Intervention Programme to tackle climate change and environmental challenges and food security in the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who inaugurated the committee in Abuja, thanked the Emir of Nguru, Mustafa Ibn Mai Kyari, for initiating the Forest Farmers Cooperative Society and requested ecological funds for the afforestation of degraded land to mitigate climate change impacts.

Represented by Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abdullahi, he recalled that the land was cleared in 2017 through the intervention of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to enable implementation of the livelihood project called Rural Agriculture Re-modelled Project Strategies.

The president said: “Since this request is in conformity with the vision and developmental agenda of the present administration, especially the attainment of the National Determined Contribution (NDC) and global emission reduction, an inter-ministerial committee comprising relevant Ministries and Agencies.

“We are committed to tackling climate change and environmental challenges, food security, as well as other socio-economic problems across the country while improving the general wellbeing of the people. This is clearly demonstrated through our various policies, programmes and initiatives.”
According to him, “government alone cannot do it, collaborative partnerships of all stakeholders including our Royal Fathers, are critical and Nguru was identified to make life better for our people through degraded lands restoration, mitigation of climate change impacts, as well as improved livelihoods.”

The committee members are Director, Forestry, Sami Hajara Umar (Chairperson), Aiwuyo Christopher, Deputy Director, Forestry; Bagudo Ahmed Majidadi – Deputy Director, NAGGW; Mustapha Iyabo – Assistant Director; Peter Henry Sule – Chief Irrigation Engineer- Federal Ministry of Water Resources.

Others include, Bayo David – Head Montane Research Outstation, FRIN; Dr. Olufemi Oladunni; Representative, Forest Farmers of Nguru; Innocent Aleniyi.

The Emir of Nguru and Sami thanked government for inaugurating the implementation committee, and pledging to work assiduously as a team to deliver their mandate on Nguru Ecological Intervention.
